Collaborative body sensor networks: Taxonomy and open challenges

2018

International audience; Single Body Sensor Networks (BSNs) have gained a lot of interest during the past few years. However, the need to monitor the activity of many individuals to assess the group status and take action accordingly has created a new research domain called Collaborative Body Sensor Network (CBSN). In such a new field, understanding CBSN's concept and challenges over the roots requires investigation to allow the development of suitable algorithms and protocols. Although there are many research studies in BSN, CBSN is still in its early phases and studies around it are very few. In this paper, we define and taxonomize CBSN, describe its architecture, and discuss its applicati…

Keynote talk 3: From basics to advanced modelling and simulation techniques for mobile radio channels

2011

From the earliest beginnings of mobile communications to the present time, there has always been a high demand for realistic mobile radio channel models. This demand is driven by the fact that channel models are indispensable for the performance evaluation, parameter optimisation, and test of mobile communication systems. Channel modelling and simulation techniques are therefore of great importance for electronics and telecommunication engineers who are involved in the development of present and future mobile communication systems. This presentation will start with a review of the basic principles of mobile radio channel modelling and gradually moves to more advanced modelling and simulatio…

A Survey of Continuous-Time Computation Theory

1997

Motivated partly by the resurgence of neural computation research, and partly by advances in device technology, there has been a recent increase of interest in analog, continuous-time computation. However, while special-case algorithms and devices are being developed, relatively little work exists on the general theory of continuous- time models of computation. In this paper, we survey the existing models and results in this area, and point to some of the open research questions. Final Draft peerReviewed

Associations of Time in Range and Other Continuous Glucose Monitoring–Derived Metrics With Well-Being and Patient-Reported Outcomes: Overview and Tre…

2021

Time in glucose ranges is increasingly relevant for research and clinical practice. Whereas the clinical validity of these metrics has been demonstrated with regard to long-term complications, their associations with patient-reported outcomes such as well-being, diabetes distress, and fear of hypoglycemia remain an open research question. This article reviews existing evidence on links between times in glycemic ranges and patient-reported outcomes. It also describes a novel research approach of using ecological momentary assessment to analyze on a more granular level in real time possible associations of these parameters of glycemic control and patient-reported outcomes. Such an approach co…

Does usable research face higher obstacles within the academy?

2018

The recognition of academic research as a potential source of economic growth and social welfare has attracted the attention of both policy-makers and academics over the past decades. But emphasising the impact of research brings a new set of tensions to scientific governance processes, and raises the risk that academics who engage more with users be hindered in pursuing their research activities. In this paper, we seek to understand whether researchers that meaningfully engage with societal users in their research micro-practices face additional obstacles in their research, whether in terms of the acceptance of that research by academic communities and the absorption of that knowledge by u…

Public availability of published research data in substance abuse journals

2014

[EN] Sharing research data is an increasingly necessary requirement for the advancement of science. The aim of this study was to analyse the policies on openness in sharing scientific research data in substance abuse journals. Journals included in the Substance abuse area of the Journal Citation Reports were used for the analysis, with reference to the instructions to authors published on the journals websites. In 67.6% of the journals, it is possible to store materials in thematic or institutional repositories; 47% accept supplemental material; 64.7% allow the reuse of data, and 41.2% admit the publication of their data on a website. Most journals recommend that authors deposit their data …

Does it take two to tango? Factors related to the ease of societal uptake of scientific knowledge

2016

Science policy increasingly focuses on maximising societal benefits from science and technology investments, but often reduces those benefits to activities involving codifying and selling knowledge, thereby idealising best practice academic behaviours around entrepreneurial superstars. This paper argues that societal value depends on knowledge being used, making knowledge's eventual exploitation partly dependent upon on whether other users-societal or scientific-can use that knowledge (i.e. on how far new knowledge is cognate with users' existing knowledge). When scientists incorporate user knowledge into their research processes, what we call 'open research behaviours', their knowledge may…

Factores facilitadores y barreras en la transición a la ciencia abierta: perspectiva de los agentes del sistema científico español

2022

This paper presents the results of a research study whose objective was to identify the facilitating factors and barriers that, in the opinion of representatives of the Spanish scientific community, impact the implementation of the new open science model in four areas: open access, open research data, research assessment and open peer review. A qualitative study was designed in which information was obtained through interviews with researchers, editors of scientific journals, representatives of assessment agencies and vice-chancellors, and through a focus group of librarians with expertise in aspects of open science. The enabling factors and barriers identified were related to the researche…
